Passage Meditation & Timeless Wisdom

Passage Meditation

Passage meditation is the method developed by Eknath Easwaran. You choose a spiritual text, or passage, that embodies your highest ideals, memorize it, and then send it deep into consciousness through slow, sustained attention.

When you meditate like this daily, the truths expressed in your passages gradually become part of your life – part of who you are. You become wiser, kinder, with a greater sense of purpose and connection to others.

As Easwaran says, this is the secret of meditation: we become what we meditate on.

Consistent and clear, this book is all you need to start meditating and practicing the full eight-point program.

Timeless Wisdom

This is Easwaran’s personal selection of passages for use in meditation. Enjoy their poetry, study their wisdom, and use them in meditation – they will change your life.

Timeless Wisdom contains many passages that Easwaran translated himself, together with some inspirational texts from the world’s traditions that are equally powerful but less well known. Easwaran chose texts that are positive, practical, and inspiring, that express the universal ideals of love, steadfastness, and wisdom.

These sacred passages from the world’s great scriptures and mystics all bear the stamp of personal spiritual experience. They speak directly to our hearts and souls.

Here are flashes of insight from the Upanishads, prayers of comfort from the Christian saints, songs of praise from the Sufis, deep wisdom from the Jewish, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions.

Timeless Wisdom is a more portable, abridged version of God Makes the Rivers to Flow.

Classics of Indian Spirituality

Easwaran’s understanding of the wisdom of these classics, together with his explanation of their significance for thoughtful readers today, makes his translations truly outstanding.

The translations are reliable and poetic, and Easwaran’s introductions are uniquely authoritative, giving clear, engaging explanations of the key concepts essential for understanding these scriptures.

All three books include chapter introductions, supported by notes and a glossary.

The Bhagavad Gita, “The Song of the Lord,” is the best known and most read of all the Indian scriptures.

Easwaran held the Gita to be India’s greatest gift to the world, and he found in it his most profound source of inspiration. It opens on the battlefield, as the warrior Arjuna turns in anguish to his spiritual teacher, Sri Krishna, for guidance. As Easwaran points out in his introduction, “The battlefield is a perfect backdrop, but the Gita’s subject is the war within, the struggle for self-mastery that every human being must wage” to live a life that is meaningful, fulfilling, and worthwhile.

The Dhammapada is a collection of the Buddha’s teachings, permeated with the power and practicality of one of the world’s most appealing spiritual teachers. Rejecting superstition on the one hand and philosophical speculation on the other, he taught the end of suffering and the way to spiritual liberation.

Although the Buddhist canon is vast, Easwaran believed that we need nothing more than the Dhammapada to follow the way of the Buddha. The introduction, a small, self-contained jewel in its own right, includes key stories from the Buddha’s life that make moving, memorable reading.

The Upanishads   In the ancient wisdom texts called the Upanishads, illumined sages share flashes of insight, the results of their investigation into consciousness itself.

In extraordinary visions, they have direct experience of a transcendent reality which is the essence of each created being. They teach that each of us is essentially eternal and deathless – one with the power that created the universe.

Easwaran’s translation is reliable and readable, consistently the bestseller in its field. It includes an overview of the cultural and historical setting, with chapter introductions, notes, and a Sanskrit glossary.

The Upanishads are, by their nature, often difficult to understand. Easwaran knew these texts intimately, and selected for translation those passages that are most relevant to readers seeking timeless truths today.
